Character Creation

Each player must create a 5E D&D player character that will be a contestant on the game show, Crucible of Fate.

PCs can be created using content from the following Wizards of the Coast Source books:

  • 5E Player’s HandBook
  • Xanathar’s Guide to Everything
  • Monsters of the Multiverse
  • Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything
  • Volo’s Guide to Monsters
  • Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft
  • Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons

Every contestant will begin the game at 3rd Level.

  • Hit Points

Characters receive max HP at 1st level as well as every subsequent level in accordance with the appropriate Hit Die for the Class in which a level was gained.

  • Ability Scores

For Ability Scores, use the Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) for base Ability Scores. This ruling ensures all characters begin the game with an equal foundation for their characters. Any modifiers to Ability Scores that come from Race, Background, Feats or any other element of Character Creation from within the WotC Source books listed above are allowed to be added to Base Ability Scores as intended.

  • Starting Equipment and Gold

Characters will begin the game with the starting equipment from their initial class, as well as 300 gp. As part of character creation, contestants can use their gold to purchase any Equipment from Chapter 5 of the Player's Handbook as well as from the Sane Magic Item Prices (SMIP) PDF which can easily be found with an internet search. Before gameplay commences, each contestant will also receive a random magic item by rolling once on Magic Item Table B (with The Killer DM observing the roll). The purchased equipment represents rewards from the adventures they had on their journey to level 3, while the free magic item is a welcome gift from Theram'Gul, the generous host of Crucible of Fate. It is important to note that contestants can sell their starting equipment and welcome gift at 50% of the listed value in the PHB and SMIP. Only items that have a listed GP value can be acquired or sold.

  • Pantheon

Characters are free to worship, serve, pray to or otherwise demonstrate devotion to a deity of their choice from within the Shadows Nigh World Setting pantheon. The deities of this realm pay close attention to the deeds of their followers, sometimes interfering in the lives of mortals, potentially rewarding those who act as exemplars of their domains.

There are five Prime Deities in the Shadows Nigh pantheon. The pantheon can be represented as a pentagram with each of the five Prime Deities being a point of the pentagram’s “star”.

The two lines that extend outward from each point on the pentagram represent the two Avatars that each represent half of the Prime Deities portfolio of domains. The shared lines between two points of the pentagram represent the opposing avatars between two Prime Deities.

  • Backstory

Please write an interesting backstory for your character that includes elements around their race, class, ideals, flaws, bonds, affiliations, etc. and also explains why/how their souls have become forfeit and have awoken as a guest of the Host of Crucible of Fate, deep within an Abyssal demi plane. Perhaps your character deserved it? Perhaps they were framed? Perhaps they somehow wandered into the Abyss by playing with magic they could not possibly understand.

Character Submission

Once you have created your character and written your backstory, please send them to highstakesdnd@gmail.com. Between episodes, the submissions will be reviewed and six contestants will be selected to appear in an upcoming episode of Crucible of Fate.
